Merritt Island has some of Brevard County's most interesting histories. It started with a citrus growing island, then a cattle-raising community in the mid 1800 hundreds and most recently the home of 36,000 residents, many of which are working at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) or Blue Origin Rocker Factory. Merritt Island's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex offers space-related experiences such as its Rockets garden, IMAX Theater, Space Shuttle Atlantic, the vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) allowing visitors to get up close to restricted areas, the Shuttle launch Experience allowing visitors to participate in in space-flight simulations, the half-day Astronaut Training Experience (ATX) that allows visitors to immerse in preparation requires for space flight, Astronaut Encounter, and Lunch with an Astronaut. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from some even on water: The Island Waterfront Bar, Molly's Seafood Shack, Island Tiki Grill, Alfredo Giulio's Paradiso along with many chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Carrabas. Merritt Island's Tropical Trails split the Indian River to form the Banana River and have impressive waterfront estates in the upwards of 15+ million dollars built on what were orange and mango groves. It is also the home of Pine Island Conservation Area, National Wildlife Refuge, home of many sea turtles, osprey, alligators, and bald eagles on 140,00 acres on the northern part of the area. Black Point Wildlife drive, a 7-mile one-way drive following a dike road around several shallow marsh impoundments is part of Merritt Island. Merritt Island Mall is the shopping place for all things needed with its own Imax & 3D Theater. Merritt Island has a Boat Parade before Christmas. For all water sports, try visiting Calema Windsurfing & Watersports on N. Banana River Drive or Surf & Ski Water Sports on E. Merritt Island Causeway. Combat Zone Sports is a paintball and airsoft facility located right behind Merritt Island Mall. The perfect year-round climate of the Space Coast coupled with the beauty of its natural surroundings lends itself to a golfer's paradise. If you'd like to golf, then check out The Savannahs.
